Major Survival in Sub-Saharan Africa
Before I came to live and work in rural Kenya with the Maasai community, I stocked up on every sort of survival gear I could get my hands on. From water purifiers to insect repellent to first aid kits and durable boots. First I figured on what I needed, and then what I needed to [...]
Jurassic Park meets Il Ngwesi
The best fake safari park meets the best real safari park, and the distance between reality and imagination gets eaten by a dinosaur...
Mamba Reptile Park in Mombasa
"Big Daddy" is a 5 meter long crocodile weighing over a metric ton. He is said to be over 75 years old. A park employee hurled a massive hunk of meat into his pen. He slowly and methodically swam across a pond and waited patiently to lumber out of the pond for his piece of monkey flesh.
The Uganda Saga, Ch. 1: Sunrise at the Border
This adventure starts in the Kenyan bush and moves in to the heart of Kampala, the hustling capital of Uganda during the bustling season of the year. Moving on from Kampala to enjoy Christmas celebrations with the Kamba family in Fort Portal, nestled in the foothills of the majestic Rwenzori mountains on Uganda’s Congo border.

Building the new Il Ngwesi into a site that looks, feels, and acts stylish, embodies expansiveness, and evokes an intimate cultural experience... it was fun! I am happy to have played a part in promoting these wonderful people.
Motorcycling in Machakos
One of the most celebrated experiences had by a VSO volunteer is the piki-piki (motorcycle) training in Machakos...The beautiful green hills and winding roads, the wind rushing past and through me, the warm sun beating down on me, the brand new expertly tuned Honda cycle straddled between my legs.
Quest for the Kiloriti
You spot an animal track subtly impressed in loose soil. The Maasai know which animal passed and where it went. You come across an ordinary looking shrub; the Maasai know the unique purpose of each plant: which animals eat it, nest in it, leave their markings on it, what can be made from it.
Pics from the Perch
My office is situated atop a hill in the Kenyan bush, where every hour brings surprises. Here is a brief selection of my favorite distractions from the 'office window'.
